January 20th, 2013: Activity Based Eco Day

Venue: M A Center

Time: 1:30PM- 6:00PM

"Everything in Nature is a wonderful miracle. Isn't the little bird flying through the vast sky a miracle?" —Amma

Let us begin the new year by giving our children the opportunity to come closer to nature.

Come for a fun filled day at the M A Center where the children & adults will learn about Solar Energy, Water shed, Dams & and the green aspect of the property by engaging in various activities.

Join us for a one-hour-plus hike in the rolling hills of the MA Center property.  Activity based walks for three age groups (4 to 8yrs, 9 to 12 yrs, and teens) will use a wide and safe trail up into the watershed of Crow Creek.

Walkers of all ages will learn about and experience the harmony of nature, flora and fauna, the rushing water and dams of the watershed of Crow Creek. We’ll talk about the amazing topography of the Bay Area shaped by multiple rivers and creeks like Crow Creek and San Leandro Creek.

With any luck we will see and learn to identify (for appropriate ages) native oaks and bay trees, redwoods, pine, eucalyptus, and many other trees.

Then in the under layer we’ll note mushrooms, grasses, coyote brush, lavender, rosemary and mistletoe hanging in the trees. We.ll look at erosion, imagine salmon swimming up the creek, get a good look at cattle grazing and how it has changed the landscape. With any luck we will see some deer, swans, ducks, hawks and vultures and maybe even a skunk or a fox (probably at a distance)!

For appropriate ages we will take a careful look at all the issues of global warming and how the natural environment reacts to and influences global warming. We’ll also take a close up look at a new large installation of solar panels. Paricipants will enjoy a 21st century learning experience in an ancient and beautiful natural setting.

If it looks like rain, bring your raincoats, boots and umbrellas and all the brave souls can take a walk in the rain. Warm and dry alternative activities will make up Plan B.

In addition to the above there will also be yoga session, service projects, games & fun activities for the children.

Below is the tentative schedule for the day.

1:30-1:45  Sign In & Introduction

1:45-2:15  Yoga Session for children & adults

2:30-4:00  Ashram Hike (Educational & Activity based tour about Solar Energy, Water Shed Etc)

4:00-4:30  Break & Snacks for Children

4:30-5:00  AIMS Seva Project for older children & Picture cutting seva for the little ones

6:00-6:15  Closing & Snacks

Time : 10:30 am to 6 pm.
Venue : Carmel

What are we doing?

Families will pack rice and other dried foods provided by the Rice Plus Project for poor migrant families during this time and then go to the Carmel beach for a picnic.  Families should bring their own picnic baskets with water/juice for their children.  If you wish to share something, that would be great too.

What is Rice Plus Project:

The Rice plus Project is a non-profit humanitarian organization that feeds clothes and supports people in our community who lack the essentials of life.  Many field workers and their families in our community are hungry every day, living in unheated sheds and rooms and trying to cope with life.

If you wish to donate something, the suggestion is to bring canned goods (vegetables, etc), powdered milk, sweaters and underwear for kids, tomato sauce in jars or cans, nuts, granola bars, etc.  Items that can be used by families with children.  Many of the kids need food for school.  Most of these items are available at Costco.  If you cannot attend the event but wish to send some non-perishable items for distribution (not rice but the other items),please contact Sudha Jaganathan.

Some of the kids will be given flower petals, others may hold deepaks, etc.  This special offering is in honor of Amma's 25th anniversary of coming to the Bay Area. The kids will be asked to sing "Aye Guru Maharani Mata Amritanandamayi" as Amma walks in and up the stage. Time: 2 pm

The Bala Kendra families have been invited to participate in 'Hiking with Kids' at Sunol Regional park (http://www.ebparks.org/parks/sunol) on Sunday, October 18th @ 2 pm.

There are many, many miles of beautiful trails to explore very close to our city, so lets get out there with kids and take a hike!

It can be a little challenging for the kids but very rewarding when they get on the little bench located on a hill overlooking the entire valley. We will be choosing the trial that will be ideal for the children of all ages and also for the parents who are hiking for the first time.

The culmination of the class, includes a Hanuman story, told through puppetry and inviting everyone to join along with their puppet in song.
